P2P file sharing is one of the hot technology trends of the moment. P2P offers the opportunity to share and exchange files of any kind without the control of a centralized authority or the interests of a commercial entity.

Several interesting tools had recently appeared and among them, two stood out for their ease of use and fast growing network of users: these were Morpheus, more specialized toward a music-oriented audience and KazaA targeted at a more general public. Both tools had been developed by a Dutch company based in Amsterdam.

The sad news came when users, me included, started to discover that both tools installed SPYWARE software on your PC without you being aware of it.

For the same reason CNET has recently removed KaZaA from its download listings.

This normally would not be an issue for those who read the fine print, since it is mentioned in KaZaA's legal notice. But it must be made well known that in this case this third party software severely threatens your and my privacy.

The software installed as spyware by KazaA (from Brilliant Digital) goes even beyond that point, acting more and more like a virus. The real workings of these third party software is not sufficiently explained to the end users by KaZaA.

The legal notice is very long and difficult to understand, particularly for those whose native language is not English.

Fact is that most users of KaZaA don't even know that there was some third party software installed by KaZaA, and more important what the software does and why.

When KaZaA is uninstalled, the third party software is not removed. Removing all traces of this third party software is very difficult, if not altogether impossible in some situations. It has taken me a good time investment and disturbing several friends to fully understand ho to get rid of this nasty beast. Virtually impossible for an average user.

KaZaA should make much more transparent and clear about what software gets to be installed when somebody decides to use KazaA. It should also make very clear what that additional software does, BEFORE end users install the KaZaA software. This is the only way in which it can be guaranteed that the end user has the choice of using the KaZaA client including all third party software, or not using the KaZaA at all.

Since I have limited control and power in making this a reality I am here providing information and access to a new alternative resource that can provide the average user a choice to be able to use the KaZaA client without being mislead by KaZaA.

N.B.: A dummy .dll file is placed by Kazaa Lite upon installation in your selected directory. This is just a "dummy" file which has no effect on the functionality of the program. It is likely placed there to make Kazaa believe it is running as it expects to.

Normally this file is part of an ad-aware program that I have mentioned before and that is called Cydoor. Do not delete this file even when ad-aware programs report its existence. It is harmless but it is indispensable to Kazaa Lite to run properly.
