Reader opinions Robin Good's Mini-Guide is a MUST HAVE for anyone using or thinking about using P2P file sharing. About this Mini-GuideFile sharing is a form of online collaboration and exchange that is experiencing tremendous growth and interest. Its influence will be felt by anyone involved in online communication and learning. Traditionally, structured file sharing has involved music files. There is nothing in the file sharing networks, however that prevents the sharing of almost any digital content you can imagine: software tools music, photos, reference files, reports, documents, home movies, and more. To start sharing and exchanging files with other Internet users you just need a file swapping tool that connects to a peer-to-peer (P2P) network (see Chapter 2). P2P networks allow to share one's own thoughts and ideas in a way that complements what Web sites normally do. As long as users are aware of privacy and other critical issues related to P2P tools and know the techniques and tools to manage those issues and control their effects, there is nothing to worry about. Unfortunately that is not always the case. Seven of the nine most popular P2P tools, downloaded by more than 320.000.000 users come with so-called spyware or adware, insidious software which tracks user behavior. The purpose of this Guide is to throw light on P2P related privacy and security issues and to provide beginners with practical advice, techniques and tools to empower them to enter the world of file and knowledge sharing.
