Online Privacy Tools: An EPIC Resource

EPIC, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, is a public interest research center based in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1994 "to focus public attention on emerging civil liberties issues and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and constitutional values".

In the course of their good work, they have identified, although not specifically endorsed, a vast number of tools and applications that anyone can use to enhance their privacy and security when online.

Links to these tools are made available on their website, in the Section entitled EPIC Online Guide to Practical Privacy Tools.

This is an outstanding resource, listing well over 100 different tools, under the following categories:

  • Snoop Proof Email

  • Anonymous Remailers

  • Surf Anonymously

  • HTML Filters

  • Cookie Busters

  • Voice Privacy

  • Email & File Privacy

  • Secure Instant Messaging

  • Web Encryption

  • Telnet Encryption

  • Disk Encryption

  • Disk/File Erasing Programs

  • Privacy Policy Generators

  • Password Security

  • Firewalls

EPIC also publishes an award-winning e-mail and online newsletter on civil liberties in the information age - the EPIC Alert, and publishes reports and books about privacy, open government, free speech, and other important topics related to civil liberties.

EPIC has no clients, no customers, and no shareholders.
