Setup - Installation

« Firewall Friendliness | Main | Ease of Access »

WebTrain offers an incredibly smooth and simple access to its online technology, without requiring the final user to install, setup or configure any specific application.

Only upon first access to a Webtrain meeting the user is prompted to download the self-installing software which is delivered through secured Cab files. One must Grant approval of the download and receive a set of files totalling about 2.5 MB. This is a one-time operation.

Right after, the process to access a meeting room is fully automatic. Kudos to webtrain for making the system truly easy to access for anyone.

All of the system testing and verification necessary to WebTrain to accept a new incoming participant is handled in less than 30 seconds by a small download window which validates your ability to receive data at least at a speed of 22 Kbps or better.

Integrated in the above Bandwidth Test window are the facilities to optionally configure firewall and proxy settings in the case of connections being made from inside a corporate firewalls or where proxies are being used.

Areas of Improvement

The Bandwidth Test window dutifully reports progress of its own testing but does not provide any useful feedback to the end user. Since the window is there to test effective Internet connection speed, it would be good for the user to be informed of the tested connection speed of her computer while providing a reference table showing what is possible to achieve at different levels of bandwidth/connection speed.

Problems in downloading/installing the WebTrain software
Sometimes an organization protects workstation PC’s by restricting software from being installed on it. Certain DLL’s contained in the software CAB file must be installed in the \windows\system or \winnt\system32 directory. When the person installing the software does not have appropriate rights to copy files to this directory, the software installation process can fail.

There are 3 solutions to this problem.

a) The software can be “pushed” to workstations, using Win2000 features. This is the preferred method.

b) The second solution is to allow the user to install applications.

c) The third solution is to have an administrator logon to the workstation PC and install the software whenever it is required or need to be updated.

In addition to the automatic cabinet file installation process, the most current version of the application is also stored on WebTrain servers at:
