Weak Points

« Key Strengths | Main | PowerPoint Presentation Facilities »

smartMeeting weak points rest on its very unique innovative and revolutionary approach to online collaboration. The price smartMeeting needs to pay to provide such an innovative solution is the one of introducing new commands and features that may require a little time for new users to acquire.

Here the other notable weak points:

  • By replicating in a fully three-dimensional immersive office space the characteristics and traits of physical reality, a whole new set of new mini-skills is required by the users of the space to effectively learn how to move, turn, look, and interact with other participants with facial gestures and body language.
  • smartMeeting is also tied to Windows and to the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. It requires the presence of good graphics board that is able to support OpenGL and which has at least 16MB of on-board video memory.
  • Responsiveness and usability of presentation facilities still leaves something to be desired, as commands and methods to enable the visualization of any information do not follow well-known standards or traditional approaches.
  • The whiteboard facility is quite limited in its operations and it is not very user-friendly. It does not allow the upload of existing images and it provides very primitive editing and mark-up tools.
  • The invitation facility is at best confusing as it offers lists of just-invited and previously-invited people in the same space. The invitation workflow and system feedback is unintuitive and leaves the host always in doubt as to whether the invitations have been actually sent out.
  • Avatars selection is still crude and quite limited. Only a few uninspiring faces have been made available along with a good basic set of possible wardrobe combinations (better selection).
  • Compatibility with Internet Explorer browsers clones(MyIE2, Avantbrowser, etc.) is limited and some commands or automatic javascripts may not perform as intended.
  • The equal-rights fully collaborative nature of this environment gives to everyone in the office space equal rights to upload, manage and display documents or files. While this is not a weak point per se, in sessions where the participants are yet not familiar with the space and its appropriate use may get into each other way if they access simultaneously the same presentation facility or try to move to the next slide in parallel.
