Audio Conferencing - VoIP

« Text Chat | Main | Video Conferencing »

smartMeeting fully integrates a highly effective and performing VoIP solution which allows full-duplex conversation, open mike, and the world's first spatial 3-D sound integration inside a conferencing/collaboration space.

Voice over IP can be activated or turned off manually by each person in a smartMeeting office with a simple click. Once activated, voice remain fully functioning without the need for pressing any button.

Voice-activated audio. The microphone of each participant is automatically activated each time one starts talking.

The quality of the audio is good. Though there appears to be a small delay (under 300 ms) there is generally no perceivable echo; smooth, spontaneous conversations can be easily started between smartMeeting office participants.

The audio bandwidth utilized is very low, totalling an average of 20-25 Kbps under most type of situations (both few people as well as when with larger groups).

Spatial 3-D sound is a revolutionary innovation that smartMeeting has introduced in this field. What this feature provides, is the ability for everyone inside a smartMeeting virtual office space (VOS) to hear sounds and voices just like in physical reality.

If a person is standing on my right side, I will hear his voice mostly from my right ear. If a person walks away from me or goes into another room, I may not be able to hear that person voice anymore.

The advantages that this technology provides are phenomenal.

1. It is much easier for us to understand and make sense of different, multiple voices or comments, when we don't see the other people (as it often happens during traditional Web conferencing meetings). Voice direction and the visual feedback of other people's positions via their avatars greatly enhances the ability of small groups to interoperate together naturally and without being encumbered by technology.

2. Multiple groups can have a dialog, while in the same smartMeeting VOS without ever interfering with each other. This is something we are not used to inside a Web collaboration space, unless we think of breakout rooms, as they have been provided by a few, advanced vendors. In smartMeeting though, any two people who want to have a somewhat private conversation, need not to create a separate room, access it and then start talking. They simply need to walk away a few steps from the other people in the office while getting very close to each other. That way, like in real-life, they can talk in a soft-tone and remain completely unheard to the rest. Or, by taking a few extra steps away, maybe to the corridor or to the relaxation area, they can talk naturally, in a normal voice tone, with no fear of being heard.
