N.B.: Orbitalk ended business operations effective April 29th 2004. Official communication:
Posted: Thu, 29 Apr 2004 Dear Orbitalk Friends and Customers, As most of you know we bought the Orbitalk.com business with much enthusiasm and expectations. Unfortunately, we have not been able to complete the programming required to implement our program or continue to operate. Sometimes it gets to the point where you have to stop the bleeding, count your losses and move on. Sadly, that time has come for Orbitalk.com. We have had to close Orbitalk, effective at the end of April, 2004. Dale Calvert President & CEO Orbitalk.com a CBA Marketing & Training Company

Orbitalk is a relatively cost-effective online Web conferencing service allowing basic audio conferencing, co-surfing, text chat and file broadcasting, along with some basic moderator features. Just like VCOM Central (see review), Webconference.com, Voxwire and Roomtalk.net, Orbitalk sports a high quality and low-bandwidth audio codec which provides crystal clear audio quality even on low-to-moderate dial up connection speeds (less than 20 Kbps for telephone-like audio quality).

The unique and exceptional quality of the audio solution identified by Orbitalk is indeed supported by the fact that the exact same technology powering Orbitalk has been the preferred choice of four key competing Web conferencing providers:

  • VCOM Central www.vcomcentral.net (see specific review), with some sharp differences in marketing approach, pricing model, and customer support. The Orbitalk version of this technology provides application sharing, which is not available in VCOM Central.
  • Voxwire, www.voxwire.com, directly connected to the same people who put together Orbitalk. Voxwire is set to serve also the ISP or wholesale market for potential redistributors of this valuable Web conferencing technology.
  • Webconference.com www.webconference.com (see specific review) which has integrated only the voice chat module only and does away with the co-browsing facility which it has integrated by utilizing a more evolved and powerful solution from Pageshare.com.
  • RoomTalk.net www.roomtalk.net (see specific review) which provides exclusive voice chat conferencing product mainly to Middle East customers.

Personally, I consider the voice chat conferencing technology behind Orbitalk the first true alternative to international long distance phone calls that I have effectively been able to use. (Though in the past I had used MediaRing and Net2Phone tools, performance, audio quality and ease of use were not even comparable to what this technology makes possible).

Orbitalk markets its Web conferencing tool through a MLM (multi-level-marketing) scheme which allows buyers of the Orbitalk technology to resell it to their friends and colleagues.

Orbitalk provides also application sharing, which is not available in VCOM Central. While the feature is yet not completely mature it does provide some very basic application sharing functionality with some mixed results.

In sharp contrast with one of its key competitors (VCOM Central), Orbitalk appears to be a more reliable, stable and trustworthy organization and its customer support is several orders of magnitude better than VCOM's.

Orbitalk costs somewhat more than its direct competitors, and the basic service provides a room for only 5-people (instead of 25 available on VCOM Central). Larger rooms and the addition of other functions are all charged as extras, making it easy to run up costs to $ 35/month or more just for what I would consider a basic set-up.
