In Microsoft NetMeeting a facility called Remote Desktop Sharing allows you to access a computer at one location from a computer at another location. You could for example share your computer at the office and access it from your home PC. Remote Desktop Sharing allows you to work on the remote computer's desktop and to have access to all of its files from another location.

You can also use Remote Desktop Sharing for technical support tasks. If you have a computer problem, a technical support person can access your computer and then fix the problem as you watch.

To use Remote Desktop Sharing, you activate it in NetMeeting, and then close NetMeeting. Remote Desktop Sharing does not work if NetMeeting is running on the computer. Once you set up Remote Desktop Sharing, and close NetMeeting, you can access it from any remote location. Remote sharing can also be used in conjunction with secure calls (see Security section) and also when password protection is active.

After you set up Remote Desktop Sharing, two icons appear in the status area, a NetMeeting icon and one for NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing. When you exit NetMeeting, the NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing icon remains in the status area.

It is recommended that you log off the computer and turn off the monitor after activating Remote Desktop Sharing. To connect to your computer from a remote location, you must know the IP address or the name of the computer you want to connect with (Microsoft correctly recommends that the shared computer is identified by its name and not by its IP address, because an IP address in the wrong hands is more dangerous than just a computer name.)
