Linktivity WebDemo

System Requirements

« Security | Main | System Check »

The Linktivity WebDemo system requirements are very basic: most current PC configurations are well equipped to run WebDemo. The Linktivity web site contains the official list.

Review Overview
This review discusses the following aspects of the system requirements within Linktivity WebDemo:

Server Requirements
The WebDemo server requirements are displayed in the following list:

  • Processor: Pentium III, 800 MHz

  • Hard Drive: 500Mb available disk space

  • RAM: 256Mb for 5-10 concurrent users; 512Mb or higher for more than ten users.

  • OS: Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 Web Edition

  • Website: Internet Information Services (IIS)

  • Controls: Internet Explorer 5.5 or later, or Netscape 7.x

  • Java: Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MVM) 5.x or Sun Java 1.4.x

  • Protocol: TCP/IP with static IP address or static DNS

  • Connection Bandwidth Requirement:
Minimum 76kbps per concurrent user required (56kbps connection per user plus 20kbps network overhead per user). For example: A meeting, or set of meetings with total of 10 connections to the server would require an available bandwidth connection of approximately 760kbps, or 1/2 of a T1 connection.

Test Browser
Once they are logged in to the WebDemo server the meeting presenter and participants can check to see if their current browser is compatible with WebDemo by clicking the Test Browser button. This option is located on the left side of the WebDemo main page and reports if the computer system and its internet connection meet the requirements. WebDemo's Test Browser feature is discussed in detail in the Host Requirements
The WebDemo host requirements are displayed in the following list:

  • Connection Type: 56kbps with 40kbps connectivity, Broadband, DSL, Cable, T1 or Higher.

  • OS: Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP

  • Browsers: Internet Explorer 5.5 or later; AOL 6.x or later, Netscape 7.x

  • Java: Microsoft Virtual Machine 5.x, or Sun Java 1.4.x

Attendee Requirements
The WebDemo attendee requirements are displayed in the following list:

  • Connection Type: 56kbps with 40kbps connectivity, Broadband, DSL, Cable, T1 or Higher

  • OS: Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP

  • Browsers: Internet Explorer 5.5 or later; AOL 6.x or later, Netscape 7.x

  • Java: Microsoft Virtual Machine 5.x, or Sun Java 1.4.x

Cons

  • Linktivity WebDemo does not support the MacOS or Unix operating systems.
  • WebDemo requires the original Internet Explorer version from Microsoft. Browser clones based on the same rendering engine and popular alternative browsers like Mozilla Firefox are not supported.
  • The system requirements listed on the Linktivity website are slightly different from the ones mentioned in the WebDemo 4.0 user guide. The latter for example claims that WebDemo is compatible with Mozilla Firefox, which certainly is not the case.
  • Some functionalities within WebDemo do not work well with the Java Virtual Machine from Sun. Errors occur when creating multiple choice questions in the polling feature and also when using the Linktivity player, a tool that allows presenters to play back recorded WebDemo sessions by double-clicking on their file name.
These issues may be resolved by uninstalling the Sun Java Virtual Machine and installing the Microsoft Virtual Machine instead.

Conclusion
The Linktivity WebDemo's system requirements are well documented and very easy to fulfill.

Disclaimer
The Guide's test team did not perform its own on-premise server installation. The WebDemo Enterprise evalation was done using a configuration hosted by Linktivity. The AOL browser has not been tested.
