Selection Criteria for SOHO Tools
The Web conferencing and live presentation tools I have included in this report match a set of selection criteria I have gradually developed to mark out SOHO Web conferencing systems from "enterprise" systems (WebEx, Placeware, Centra, etc.).
The following key criteria guided identification and selection of Web conferencing and online live presentations tools for this report:
SOHO Web conferencing tools ...
- DO NOT charge according to a per seat/per minute price model.
- either require a one time license fee within USD $ 1,500 or a flat-fee monthly cost ranging between $ 12 and $ 150 for unlimited use.
- allow collaborating, co-surfing, chatting and voice collaborating NOW, without requiring any software installation on your server.
- are tailored to the wants and needs of individuals, friends, families, small teams and dispersed groups.
- integrate (where relevant) Voice over IP technology (Internet Phone) in place of requiring the use of traditional phone lines, thereby facilitating highly cost-effective audio conferencing.
- are offered by small and independent providers.
Though a few of the tools I have selected do not fully meet all of the above criteria, they have served me well in separating SOHO Web conferencing tools from those targeted at the enterprise market.
I have included reviews of three major enterprise Web conferencing systems (WebEx, Centra and Polycom WebOffice) as a reference in order to enable you to personally evaluate the SOHO systems against them and to evaluate the trade off and cost-benefit ratio relative to your unique purposes and needs.
