Groove

Weak Points

« Key Strengths | Main | PowerPoint Presentation Facilities »

  • Bandwidth hungry. Groove requires powerful PCs and good Internet connectivity to work effectively. (Please see detailed System requirements section).
  • Performance. Unless you have a last generation PC (Pentium III or IV, 400MHz or better, 128MB RAM or more, Windows 2000 or better) you may have to be patient with this powerful beast.
  • Printing. Not available in most Groove modules. Is in the planning but it is still not there. Depending on your use this maybe a minor or major gap.
  • Sharing large files with teammates on low connection speeds is not advisable. Groove shared spaces are not designed for document "storage," but rather collaboration around documents. (Suggested reading: http://www.groove.net/pdf/ Groove_and_Bandwidth.pdf)
  • No annotation features available outside of the sketchpad.
  • No ability to integrate (yet) one or more live video feeds. (Video streaming of clips is possible through a third-party module called MediaTeam by the Symbiant Group).
  • Synchronization issues. If one or more members of the shared space fail to run Groove while online for an extended period of time (three weeks or longer), or if there is a high level of activity within a space, the log file may become unacceptably large for other members and thus cause problems in properly synchronizing workspaces of those long-missing team members.
