GoToMeeting

Weak Points

« Key Strengths | Main | PowerPoint Presentation Facilities »

It is honestly hard to find weaknesses in GoToMeeting outstanding screen sharing and remote control toolkit.

This software does deliver on its promises and it doesn't make it hard on the user to be rapidly adopted, especially by non-technical users, and immediately put to good use.

Live markup and annotation tools are a great addition, with a touch of innovation and usability, but they are for now a well kept secret, as they are so secretely hidden under a next-to-invisible icon. Some usability issues remain when it comes to make such annotation tools as easy to use for non-technical users as the rest of the system. For example, to switch from annotating to point-and-click mode, the user has to perform a sometimes difficult operation, having to hit an mini-icon space and then selecting the appropriate choice from a pop-up menu. Nonetheless once can turn off annotation tools by simply clicking on the esc' key or right-clicking anywhere on the screen there is no prompt or tooltip suggesting this to the user. Not that most competitors are much better in this area, but when a tool distinguishes itself for its extreme ease of use, you do notice the few spots where it lacks that.

GoToMeeting is generally well suited for small-sized meetings and its standard offering limits the number of participants to a session to a maximum of 10 (plus the presenter). For larger-sized sessions one needs to look into the GoToMeeting Corporate offering allowing standard meetings to be held with a maximum of 25 participants (26 with the presenter).

While GoToMeeting supports most any modern browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, Netscape Navigator 6.0 or later (and Netscape Navigator 4.75 for Windows 95) or Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or later) GoToMeeting doesn't run on Macs or Linux machines and requires at least an ADSL (+256Kbps up and down) line to perform acceptably.

I and many users on the Internet have been complaining about Citrix/GoToMeeting marketing strategy requiring in many cases the submission of your personal credit card information to get access to the publicly promoted free trial. Such policy doesn't bode well with a large number of Internet users and in my opinion may have negatively affected the end user perception of the company as a trustable and friendly service supplier.
