GoToMeeting

Overview

« Cost - Pricing | Main | Key Strengths »

GoToMeeting is a Windows-based screen sharing software solution offering extreme ease of use, a set of complementary features and a competitive price.

Originally developed by Santa-Barbara-based Expertcity, this software technology utilizes an evolved implementation of the original GoToMyPC Windows-based remote access technology, and it has rapidly become one of the very best screen sharing tools available in the PC market today.

It offers outstanding ease of use, a very effectively designed user interface and strong invitation features.

Its screen-sharing abilities are compounded by a high quality screen-sharing engine capable of adjusting automatically to different bandwidth connections while always delivering a 24-bit full color image of the screen being broadcast (many screen sharing solutions default to 256-colors).

GoToMeeting is a simple tool focused on doing screen sharing and remote control in an extremely effective way. Hard to beat on these same grounds.

Extreme care has been taken in the design of the interface, access to the main controls and in the strategic provision of many helpful visual text messages facilitating immediate interpretation and use of this compelling tool.

Installation and setup are very straightforward and present next to no challenge to even to the most non-technical user.

Performance and reliability are above the average, with no recorded errors or encountered bugs in my extended multi-month testing period.

GoToMeeting offers a free 30-day trial that requires in many (but not all) cases the user to submit its credit card credentials to obtain such free trial. Subscribers of this Official Guide can access a full try-out that requires no credit card submission by accessing the Trial - Demo section of this review.

GoToMeeting offers both a Personal and a Corporate level account. The GoToMeeting Corporate plan contains an online module to manage organizer accounts, to view currently active meetings and to generate usage reports.

GoToMeeting allows users to have one of three different roles:

Organizer – Organizers have accounts with GoToMeeting that enable them to schedule and conduct meetings. Organizers are also the meeting Host and the initial meeting Presenter and they are the ones who may pass the Presenter role to any other Attendee. Organizers have also the ability to grant or revoke Attendee privileges, and to invite or dismiss Attendees during a meeting. Organizers can also make other Attendees Organizers themselves.

Attendee – An Attendee is any person who attends a GoToMeeting session – this includes Organizers, and Presenters themselves. Attendees can be given the right to control the presenter keyboard and mouse, if given the privilege. If allowed, Attendees may see and use the text chat facility and view the Attendee List.

Presenter – A Presenter is any Attendee who is giving a presentation and shares his or her computer screen with everyone else. Whoever starts the meeting is also by default the initial meeting Organizer. Tjose assigned with the Presenter role can determine who gets to control the keyboard and mouse of the presenter’s remotely viewed screen.

Organizers using GoToMeeting Personal are limited to 10 meeting Attendees, plus the Organizer, for a total of 11 people in each meeting. Organizers using GoToMeeting Corporate may invite up to 25 meeting Attendees, for a total of 26 people in each meeting.

GoToMeeting is overall a outstanding product that delivers in full what it claims to offer, while improving significantly on its direct competitors offerings.
