Firewall Friendliness

« Browser Compatibility | Main | Setup - Installation »

Glance can be effectively utilized also in situations where session participants are behind a firewall or HTTP proxy server.

The Glance application on your PC connects to Glance main servers using TCP/IP to destination port 5500 if you are showing your screen, or destination port 5900 if you are joining a session to view.

If it cannot connect to these ports, Glance attempts to "tunnel" through the firewall via HTTP to destination port 80.

In some, rare instances, certain firewall configurations may prevent Java applets from being downloaded. This type of situation would prevent any computer behind the firewall from participating in a Glance session.

By utilizing the very simple testing utility "Can you Glance?" you can also pre-determine if Glance is going to have firewall problems on your computer. If the "Can you Glance?" light does not show a green light but rather shows a amber or yellow one, you know that your firewall is forcing Glance to "tunnel" via HTTP. When this happens Glance performance can be drastically reduced up to 50% or less of its standard one.

To configure your firewall through a security rule that allow perfect utilization of Glance follow these official suggestion:
Add a rule that allows outbound TCP/IP connections to the Glance servers at 64.95.77.32/27 (i.e., IP addresses 64.95.77.32 through 64.95.77.63, which is 64.95.77.32 with subnet mask 255.255.255.224) to destination ports 5500 and 5900.

Glance can be used to do online sessions also with most people behind a SOCKS proxy. "If the person uses Microsoft's Internet Explorer, version 5.0 or higher, it should connect fine. If the person uses a Netscape browser, depending upon your corporate firewall policy, it might not connect."

Glance works reliably also through most NAT (Network Address Translation) routers/firewalls.
