Under its General Preferences ASAP provides a number of controls to manage security, passwords and intrusions.

It is also possible to fully encrypt ASAP sessions and/or the ASAP Contact List. When you select My Meetings, ASAP displays a "Secure Session" indicator in the lower right-hand corner of the Meeting Console.

The ability to manage passwords allows the user to easily change/modify her own password settings.

A nice options, labelled "Only accept messages from users on my Contact List" allows the end user to set other users not in their Contact List to see her as "Unavailable".

More information on how to manage intrusions is available here.

Cons:
According to the official ASAP Help Documentation "The performance implications of encrypted meetings and use of HTTP tunneling when using a broadband connection are very similar.

The following list indicates the incremental delays when using either meeting encryption (or HTTP tunneling or) :

Meeting Console: 2 to 4 seconds longer to update

Text chat: 2 to 4 seconds

Video: 3 to 6 seconds

Audio: 2 to 4 seconds (intermittent). Expect more audio dropouts, especially for multiparty audio transmissions.

Screensharing: 5 to 10 seconds additional delay.

Presentations: 5 to 10 seconds, especially when first loading a presentation

Annotations: 2 to 4 seconds

  • Convoq provides no information whatsoever as to the type of encryption methodology utilized inside ASAP. It is not clear what encryption protocol is used and how "strong" is the protection provided.

The only mention of encryption on the Convoq site is in the Terms of Service page where it stated: "This site may use encryption technology that is subject to licensing requirements under the U.S. Export Administration Regulations, 15 C.F.R. Parts 730-774 and Council Regulation (EC) No. 1334/2000."
