Remote PC Support Tools: A Mini-Guide

Sponsored Links

Do you need to provide technical assistance to a PC user that lives far from you and you don't know how to do it? Today there are many interesting remote PC support tools that enable you to do that without requiring you to have any particular skill.

Remote PC support tools share many of the traits that characterize web conferencing systems: they allow users to perform screen sharing and view the desktops of other users, take control over them and they enable the participants to interact via text chat or audio (sometimes also providing support for video conferencing).

Remote PC support tools also differentiate themselves from remote PC access tools (which I have showcased in another mini-guide published on these very pages). Remote PC access tools normally do not require another user to be on the remotely accessed computer, enabling the user to utilize her PC at a distance in a completely autonomous way.

So what characterizes remote PC support tools? Basically the possibility to enable the user to perform extra activities that are particularly important when providing remote support to users who are experiencing technical difficulties or need another user to access their computer to perform a specific task; such extra activities are remote PC diagnostics and the possibility to reboot/restart the other PC.

In this mini-guide I review and compare a number of tools that allow you to perform remote PC support without making it a hassle. Most of these tools are also useful when you need to give live presentations of a product and some of them also offer integrated video-conferencing.

As always, this does not pretend to be a fully comprehensive list, as there may certainly be more tools and services that provide remote PC support but that I have not listed here. I invite you to provide pointers and suggestions to other tools that you may feel should belong to this list by using the comment section at the end of the article.

ThinVNC is another alternative: a pure web app that uses HTML5 to replace the old VNC.

Here you have a link to the product page. There's a exe setup ready to be used, and ThinVNC is free for non commercial use:

If the pricing is not correct or up to date anymore, and you are a Citrix Executive, the company behind GoToAssist, wouldn'it be nice of you to share the updated info?

This is a 2-year old guide and it is not easy to keep up with all changes happening at each company, unless you the companies become a little more proactive in helping us manage this.

Citrix Account Executive

Pricing listed here for GoToAssist is not accurate, nor is this a fair comparison of these tools.

Comparing GoToAssist with these other vendors is like taking a quote for a Honda to a Mercedes dealer and asking them to price match.

For the real scoop check out!

You can also try HelpBeam. It is also one of the most affordable solutions and requires no installation, just type in a number and a small exe download.

Another service which undoubtedly deserves mentioning is Techinline Remote Desktop ( First of all, it's one of the most affordable remote access tools available, and the ease of connection is probably second to none, given that nobody has to download or install anything on either end. All the client has to do is open a page in their browser, get a number which you enter on your end, and that's it! For what I'm currently paying, I find it to be an absolute steal

I spent a lot of time looking at various apps. I've used ultravnc which is free but needs a bit of setting up and a fixed IP to work effectively.

However, works really well if you want a simple support tool at no cost with no installation or setup.

Not the best quality versus a paid for app but does a good enough job for me.

You could also try out I'm OnCall - - for your help desk software needs.

Another remote support tool to add to your list is Instant Housecall Remote Support

Full featured, inexpensive, and works easily through firewalls. A top pick, IMO!
