Screen Sharing Tools: The Best Low-Cost Solutions - June 2005 Update

If you want to show your computer screen, a presentation or a set of documents to someone connected to the Internet who lives across the ocean, you need to use a "screen sharing" software or online service.

While most popular web conferencing systems like WebEx, Microsoft Live Meeting, Centra, Genesys do offer screen sharing as part of their standard feature set, you do not need to spend the full price of these richly-featured enterprise conferencing systems when all you need is the ability to show your screen in a simple and reliable way.

By browsing through classified internal research statistics conducted by some of these large web conferencing providers, I have had confirmation that most online collaboration/conferencing meetings are generally made up of two to four people only, and leverage screen sharing, co-browsing and text-chat as their key features.

Given the above, and while large providers wake up to the idea of differentiating their feature set into multiple products and services, you really need not go into dumping hundreds of dollars a month to get a service that you will use only in limited part.

A growing number of very cost-effective screen-sharing services has reached the market in the last 18 months and it is now reaching maturity. These services have extremely low monthly costs (tens of dollars instead of hundreds), offer a free trial, can be cancelled at any time, and do not generally require complex installation procedures or large software downloads.

If you want to screen share what's happening on your computer with other people connected to the Internet, these are the tools to use:

Robin:

A quick update on Glance (I'm its CEOFounder):

Glance is a cross-platform (PCs, Macs, Linux) desktop sharing tool that is simple and dependable.

Our typical user is an inside salesperson doing web demos and presentations, who needs an easy-to-use tool that connects quickly and reliably.

Glance nearly always connects, because it takes a "belt and suspenders" approach. If a guest's computer doesn't support one method, Glance automatically tries other alternatives (Java or ActiveX, TCP or HTTP). So guests are much more likely to connect. Your 10am web demo starts at 10am, not 10:15.

Up to 100 guests can now be in each session. No increase in cost. All guests connect for free.

Each guest gets the best possible view. Glance sends each of them a custom bitstream, matched to their instantaneous bandwidth. Fast guests go fast; slow ones never fall behind.

The latest version (2.4) also lets you easily provide remote technical support to your customers.

We're also just now rolling out free telephone audio conferencing (everyone just dials a standard US phone number).

Hi, can I recommend Demo Now, our screen-sharing service with usage based charging from only $1 per hour. No need for a subscription.

No plugins are required for people viewing. It uses standards compliant web-browser javascript, so it works in all modern browsers, on all platforms (PC, Mac, Linux). All of the data is transferred via standard HTTP, so it's even corporate firewall friendly.

We developed this service because we were often frustrated by firewall and plugin issues with other screen sharing services.

You can get more info and start a free trial at http://www.DemoNow.net

Also reccomended would be Oracle Web Conferencing, for the powerful application sharing capabilities. Offered as a hosted service at Batipi.com, one user account for $60/mth, will provide unlimited meetings & participants.

Bracket

I find the software Bracket as the best software in terms of features and pricing. Currently its free and provides very professional Desktop sharing (multiple simultaneous sessions), File transfers, Chat system (text+picture), hotlink based network access and much more. In addition to all this the software is platform independent and its fulfilling all of my network needs. I think its worth a try.

Are there other hardware screen sharing solutions similar to Ascots Coursemaster that do not require a software install and support multi platforms?

Hello Robin: I also suggest to our readers to visit
TightVNC, http://www.tightvnc.com/index.html, a
russian project coordinated by Constantin Kaplinsky,
similar to (you guess it!) VNC. I helped to translate
into spanish part of the documentation at
