Simply copy and paste the link of the feed you want to turn into a newspaper, and click the "Generate" button. The content of your RSS feed will be extracted and arranged into a newspaper-like outline.

Whether you print your customized newspaper, or choose to read it on your computer screen, the immediate benefit of these services is you can save yourself from clicking back and forth through the whole list of feeds you got. Just gather and place your feeds in one place.

You can also create as many newspapers as you want, each one dedicated to a specific topic. You're more into sport than foreign policy? Aggregate a list of feeds that deal with sport news, and enjoy just the content you like.

Your newspaper will be delivered in a PDF format. So, if you run out of paper you could also consider syncing your newspaper directly with your smart phone or iPod. Get the old-fashioned style of news reading in a 21st century way!

And what if you have a blog, and you'd like to share your news selection with your readers? FeedJournal has a social feature which lets you distribute your newspaper through a widget, a direct download link, or by embedding a small piece of code inside your blog site.

Media Literacy: Making Sense Of New Technologies And Media by George Siemens - Nov 29 08

Is our worldwide education system ready to prepare for the unpredictability and fast changes that the 21st century will be serving?

Education isn’t only about creating employees. It’s about empowering individuals to become individuals with the ability to manage effectively the increasingly faster transformations of a complex world like ours.

This is why, one should measure education by looking at how tangibly such goal is achieved rather than by measuring the number of tested and certified students the school system is capable of producing. True education, when successful, must essentially prepare its students for dealing with greater and more complex problems. But not those served in a neat and sanitized math test, but rather those emerging from the clash of the multidisciplinary realities we inhabit.

Learning how to handle uncertainty, as well as how to rapidly adapt to fast changing environments is the real blockbuster formula to an education approach that provides the mental tools to cope with whatever can come your way, rather than pre-emptying you with static notions and arid, reality-isolated formulas..

Here all the details:

eLearning Resources and News

learning, networks, knowledge, technology, trends

by George Siemens

Connectivism: Networked Learner

Over the last 12 weeks, Stephen Downes and I have facilitated a course on Connectivism and Connective Knowledge. The final “project” for enrolled participants is to reflect on the quality of their own learning networks.

Wendy Drexler has posted a video of her final project that is (deservedly) getting significant attention: Connectivism: Networked Learner (also available on YouTube)

Definition of Emerging Technologies for Learning

I received an email recently asking for my definition of emerging technologies for learning. To enlarge the conversation, I asked the question on Twitter. The following are responses:

Eduinnovation: “Those technologies that allow learners to connect, collaborate, and create with other learners, mind-to-mind, anywhere & anytime”

prawsthorne: “an innovation that captures attention, engages and deepens learning so the learner/teacher can self-measure the improvement.”

MarkMilliron: “any technology YOU don’t quite understand that you’ve heard might improve teaching and learning”

UNMVCTLC: “using technology TOOLS to improve the learning process while enhancing the instructional environment” and “using those tools that are not fully explored to reach new frontiers in methodology, experiences and concepts”

jdwilliams: “I think emerging (web) technologies are just sites/apps my district hasn’t found to block (yet)”

Darren Draper: “Emerging technologies for teaching and learning consist of all hardware, software, concepts, and ideas that can be employed to advance social, connective, and educational processes”

davecormier: “usually defined as - stuff George likes - I believe”

bengrey: “A body of knowledge or innovation not yet widely adapted or fully actualized which holds educational implications”

StonyRiver: “New Direction Learning Technologies”

How do you define emerging technologies for learning (or is the attempt to provide a definition sooo web 1.0?)?

Social Computing

Dave Snowden is well-known in the knowledge management field. He has been kind enough in the past to present to online conferences that we have hosted at University of Manitoba (most recently, our Future of Education conference). Over the last few years, his writings / presentations have taken a turn that very much fits in with concepts presented in this forum and in CCK08.

Dave started blogging about two years ago, but I’ve been following his work through his publications and contributions to ACT-KM. I could be imagining things, but his shift to blogging seems to coincide with his increased attention to the fragmentary nature of information.

Distributed conversations, not packaged as they have been in the past through frameworks such as articles and books, in blogs provide an interesting experience in personal sensemaking.

In a recent presentation (.pdf of slides - why not slideshare?… podcast is here), Dave details seven principles of KM, including: “Tolerated failure imprints learning better than success.”

Visualizing Data

Click the image to go to the interface page

OECD has been learning from Hans Rosling and Gapminder. In order to make their data more accessible, they’ve created (or had someone create) an application for visualizing data.

I personally prefer gapminder’s interface, but OECD’s contribution is appreciated. If data is made more accessible it will be used more often as a guide for decision making (he says in his most idealistic voice).

Microsoft’s Personal Reboot: Web-Centric, But Beyond “The Cloud”

Microsoft has been a favorite source of mockery for all the cool web 2.0′ers.

Microsoft is seen as too closed, too confined to the desktop, too late to search, and too out of touch with how people want to compute. In the face of this criticism, Microsoft continues to attempt a transformation - Personal Reboot: Web-Centric, But Beyond “The Cloud”:
“Cloud computing may be trendy, but Ozzie says MSFT’s best course moving forward is a hybrid desktop/Web-based strategy… future success hinges on new products that win over the masses instantly.”

Education Needs to Be Pulled Into The 21st Century

Short rant. Articles like - Education needs to be pulled into the 21st century - cause many educators to smile and nod in agreement.

The report broadly splashes all the latest and coolest terms that cause sensible educators to viciously agree:
“In an increasingly complex and competitive world, teachers must understand technology and connect coursework to the global economy, curricula should eliminate less relevant material and incorporate modern skills such as global awareness, technology and media literacy, and standardized tests must include these new subjects”.

Ok. That’s very nice. We are then treated with the typical mis-focused comment: “I hope to encourage policymakers to better equip our graduates for today’s and tomorrow’s jobs”.

Education isn’t only about creating employees. It’s about assisting individuals to develop into the types of people that can tackle and handle the continual gyrations of a complex world. I don’t buy into the “education must prepare people for jobs that don’t yet exist” view. Education - as it always has - must prepare people for an unknown future. This isn’t new.

When I was going to school, the particular job that I have today did not exist. How should we prepare people for, let’s say, the current financial crisis? By training people to be stockbrokers? No. You can’t prepare people for black swans. People must be capable of handling uncertainty, but also adapting as environments shift and change.

At its most basic, education must move from epistemology to ontology. Getting back to the report: give us something useful. Statements as broad as those provided in the article (i.e. “develop new programs, standards, partnerships and assessment measures”) are hardly a basis for action. Perhaps it’s time that we stop focusing on what our curriculum is and start focusing on how we actually do curriculum in the first place.

Systems for Supportive Open Teaching

We’ve experienced this in CCK08: Systems for Supportive Open Teaching:
“I think it more valuable to think about how openness changes the basic praxis of teaching from an essentially individual activity to a shared activity.”

But, as we’ve discovered, openness may produced shared activity at some levels (students helping each other, taking on leadership roles, connecting to others outside of the course, etc). Open teaching is really best seen as open learning. When we learn in transparent ways, we become teachers. But not everyone wants to learn in open ways.

In CCK08, we had numerous participants who did not contribute by posting or commenting. Instead, they observed / lurked. They did not contribute in the way we would have expected. Lack of direct participation does not mean they didn’t learn - at least that’s what some participants have expressed here.

Open teaching, therefore, means also rethinking our expectations of engagement. We simply can’t control students the way we have done in classroom environments. Open teaching will become a rather shallow concept if we bring too much of closed-classrooms to the process.

Online Learning Requirements

Grassroots activities in incorporating technology into teaching and learning goes a long way. Due to the current design of the education system, grassroots activities keep bumping up against barriers.

However, initiatives like this one in Minnesota will become more common:
“To expand access, increase technology skills, provide exciting and inspiring course content, and maximize efficiency and use of taxpayer resources, Governor Tim Pawlenty and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) Board of Trustees Chair David Olson today announced a goal to have 25 percent of all MnSCU credits earned through online courses by 2015.”

It’s a start. I’d like to hear more about how they’re planning to develop the faculty to actually teach the online courses… and how they’re redesigning the existing education system to ensure that they aren’t only transferring content online, but that they are actually transforming the learning experience to utilize the affordances of the medium.

Is our worldwide education system ready to prepare for the unpredictability and fast changes that the 21st century will be serving?

Education isn't only about creating employees. It's about empowering individuals to become individuals with the ability to manage effectively the increasingly faster transformations of a complex world like ours.

Connectivism: Networked Learner

Over the last 12 weeks, Stephen Downes and I have facilitated a course on Connectivism and Connective Knowledge. The final "project" for enrolled participants is to reflect on the quality of their own learning networks.

Eduinnovation: "Those technologies that allow learners to connect, collaborate, and create with other learners, mind-to-mind, anywhere & anytime"

prawsthorne: "an innovation that captures attention, engages and deepens learning so the learner/teacher can self-measure the improvement."

MarkMilliron: "any technology YOU don't quite understand that you've heard might improve teaching and learning"

UNMVCTLC: "using technology TOOLS to improve the learning process while enhancing the instructional environment" and "using those tools that are not fully explored to reach new frontiers in methodology, experiences and concepts"

jdwilliams: "I think emerging (web) technologies are just sites/apps my district hasn't found to block (yet)"

Darren Draper: "Emerging technologies for teaching and learning consist of all hardware, software, concepts, and ideas that can be employed to advance social, connective, and educational processes"

davecormier: "usually defined as - stuff George likes - I believe"

bengrey: "A body of knowledge or innovation not yet widely adapted or fully actualized which holds educational implications"

StonyRiver: "New Direction Learning Technologies"

How do you define emerging technologies for learning (or is the attempt to provide a definition sooo web 1.0?)?

Dave Snowden is well-known in the knowledge management field. He has been kind enough in the past to present to online conferences that we have hosted at University of Manitoba (most recently, our Future of Education conference). Over the last few years, his writings / presentations have taken a turn that very much fits in with concepts presented in this forum and in CCK08.

Dave started blogging about two years ago, but I've been following his work through his publications and contributions to ACT-KM. I could be imagining things, but his shift to blogging seems to coincide with his increased attention to the fragmentary nature of information.

Distributed conversations, not packaged as they have been in the past through frameworks such as articles and books, in blogs provide an interesting experience in personal sensemaking.

In a recent presentation (.pdf of slides - why not slideshare?… podcast is here), Dave details seven principles of KM, including: "Tolerated failure imprints learning better than success."

Click the image to go to the interface page

OECD has been learning from Hans Rosling and Gapminder. In order to make their data more accessible, they've created (or had someone create) an application for visualizing data.

I personally prefer gapminder's interface, but OECD's contribution is appreciated. If data is made more accessible it will be used more often as a guide for decision making (he says in his most idealistic voice).

Microsoft has been a favorite source of mockery for all the cool web 2.0′ers.

Microsoft is seen as too closed, too confined to the desktop, too late to search, and too out of touch with how people want to compute. In the face of this criticism, Microsoft continues to attempt a transformation - Personal Reboot: Web-Centric, But Beyond "The Cloud":
"Cloud computing may be trendy, but Ozzie says MSFT's best course moving forward is a hybrid desktop/Web-based strategy… future success hinges on new products that win over the masses instantly."

If you have been following the story of the MasterNewMedia internship program, you know already that at the end of the summer I have selected two new candidates to jump into this unique learning and working opportunity.

MasterNewMedia intern Andre Deutmeyer

In their learning path leading to a professional publishing position, I personally guide my scholars to try out and become familiar with all phases, tools and methods of new media communication. And video interviewing is one of these.

Thanks to the amazing new video technologies and services available today, the technical part of a video interview) is now within most everyone reach leaving while the key challenge for most is the ability to develop an effective editorial approach and a credible, genuine personal communication style.

This time is Andre Deutmeyer's turn to be under the spotlight and to share his learned lessons after a couple of months inside inside the MasterNewMedia internship program.

By all means this is both a real learning opportunity for both Andre and Daniele to try firsthand what it means to be on either side of a video camera and what it takes to be oneself in front of it.

As you will see in this video, Andre, the interviewee is naturally very spontaneous and believable, as he apparently answers questions just like he was talking to a friend sitting in front of him. No fancy terminology, no difficult tech terms, no stiff position, outfit or attitude. The way to go!

On the other hand, Daniele, who you have met in another video interview a few weeks ago, has a much harder time being credible, because of his very own conscious effort to be "alive" and "entertaining". In my eyes, Daniele comes out as being a lot more fake than he really is, showing clearly that to have video impact on the web you really need to be yourself 110%. Easy to say, but not so much to do, unless you get to have lots of opportunities to try out, experiment and let yourself go.

My best advice to both Daniele and you is not to fret. Take your time and experiment, while making your best effort of visualizing a true, intimate friend in front of you. Tell your story or ask your questions as you would do if you met that person inside an airport lounge with little time available and a great curiosity to find out more about the person you have in front of you.

The beauty of video on the web, is that it opens up a new approach to communication, drastically different from the stiff, pre-packaged mass-media delivery that traditional television programming has long brainwashed us to expect. Here the name of the game is
"take down all formalities, institutionalized attitudes and speak in your natural true voice. Say what you think, be spontaneous, don't hold back, make mistakes but be real. Just like you are when in the midst of your best and closest friends".

Intro

Daniele Bazzano: Hello everyone, my name is Daniele Bazzano and I'm intern at MasterNewMedia. I'm here with my friend and colleague Andre Deutmeyer who's connecting live with us from Seoul, South Korea.

Hi, Andre, how are you doing?
Andre Deutmeyer: Hey Dani, how are you?

Daniele Bazzano: I'm doing great thank you.

Why Andre Joined MasterNewMedia

Daniele Bazzano: Andre, I want to chat a little bit with you about your internship experience here, about MasterNewMedia.

Just tell me, how did it all start?

Andre Deutmeyer: Dani, to tell you the truth, the way I got started with MasterNewMedia was a few months back. I think it's about three months now.

Three months ago I was looking for something new to do. The reason for that is that my job here in Seoul is... I'm an English teacher here. It gives me quite a bit of free time on the side to pursuit some of the things that I enjoy, some of the things that I cannot really want to do. One of the things that interested me is web publishing, online technology and more.

About three months back I was reading blogs and as I was going through some of that stuff I saw a link to Robin Good's MasterNewMedia page and he was saying that he was looking for interns. I read it and I thought: "wow, this is interesting, this is something that might be really good for me".

I thought about it for a while, and then about a week or two later, I think I read your post Dani. After reading that post I was like: "this sounds really good. This sounds like something that I really want to do".

So, I wanted to head to that point. I sent Robin Good an email, and then he called me. We chatted a little bit, and the rest is history. Now here I am!
Daniele Bazzano: That's great! So, I was the one who introduced you to MasterNewMedia... That's cool man!

Finding The Time

Daniele Bazzano: Andre, you said you're an English teacher. How do you manage to find the time to stay with your friends, your girlfriend, work, and at the same time do this internship at MasterNewMedia, which many times can be very time-consuming?

Andre Deutmeyer: That's really a good question Dani.

A lot of times I'm actually wondering how I can stick with it myself. I think the biggest thing for me, the reason I stick with this internship, to MasterNewMedia, is this is what I really want to do.

Teaching is fun, I enjoy it, but I personally don't want to go into education as a teacher. I don't think that's where my future lies. I think something like independent web publishing is what I would like to do in the future. That's the reason I kind of stick with this.

As far as finding the time goes, it's just like anything else in life. If you want to do it, then you have to make time for it. I make sacrifices in other areas: personal life being, the biggest one.

I still have to work my job because it pays me, and pays the bills and stuff. But lots of times now when I spend time with my girlfriend, it would be doing something productive together. I'll be working on an article, perhaps she will be studying or doing internship applications of her own. That's kind of where we get to spend time together now.

And every once in a while, I do save time for myself. I still go out, watch the occasional movie, I actually watched... what was the last movie? It doesn't really matter, but I do have time to go out and do things, have dinner with my girlfriend, go to movies.

It's just I have to be a little more careful now with how I spend my time.

Pros and Cons About The Internship

Daniele Bazzano: That's great Andre, thank you for sharing your experience here! But now, let's get this straight: just tell me three pros and three cons about your internship experience here. Straight, just don't think about it.

Andre Deutmeyer: Oh yeah, that's a harder question than you might think.

Let's go with the three pros, because I think that's a lot easier.

Like I've already said, first thing is the opportunities available here. I'm learning a lot of stuff and I'm learning a lot of stuff that interests me, which is one big pro why I'm here.

The second one is the people. I love the atmosphere, I like how white and black it can be. There's very few places in the world where I can wear a beanie to work, and that's great for me. Robin, Dani, and all the people working at MasterNewMedia, are all great people.

As for the third reason, it can provide a future for me. This is something where I can be my own boss, in the future, and that's really kind of what attracts me to MasterNewMedia, and what I'm doing right now.

As far as the cons, that's a little bit more difficult... three cons?

Honestly I can only really think of one off the top of my head, and that's the whole sacrificing all those things that I used to do: going out and going to karaoke until 6am, or drinking at the local pub with my friends. I've given up those things, and that's the real con.

I'm not going to play down and act like it is not a bad sacrifice, because I think it is a sacrifice. But it's one that I'm going to make.

I hope that answers your question. The other two cons, I'd just give you that back later on Dani.

Andre's Advices For Future Interns

Daniele Bazzano: Sounds great Andre, you really answered my questions, there was no need to go to the other two cons.

I think this internship is a difficult path that you are walking, but it's definitely something that you would advise to someone else who wants to become a publisher.

What are your advices to them? What would you advise?

Andre Deutmeyer: For others who are interested in this internship I would say that you have to be willing to... you have to know in your mind, and right in your heart, this is something nice you want to do.

There's no one telling you that you have to come to work everyday. This is a choice that you make.

You have to know in your heart that this is what you want to do. Especially in my position where I have another job, it's even more necessary to realize that this is something you want to do, this is something that's important, and something that you want to learn how to do.

You get to really decide before you start, before you jump into this, that this is something that you see yourself doing in the future, being a productive relationship for you in the future. Once you've made that decision, I think the internship would go smoothly.

You'll have some difficulties, you'll be learning a lot of new stuff, you'll be making some mistakes, but overall as long as you have that idea in mind: "this is what I want to do, and I want to to stick with it, no matter the obstacles that face me, no matter the problems I encounter, I'm going to stick with it". If you have that attitude, I don't see how you can fail, this would be a great opportunity for you to learn something new.

And on top of that, Robin is flexible. He's a nice guy, he understands that you can have all the commitments in your life. You just have to tell him, you have to work with him, work things out, and that sense is great.

I really can't ask for a better mentor internship.
Daniele Bazzano: That was great Andre. Thank you very much for sharing your experience and it's been a real pleasure talking to you.

I'll chat with you later, or we'll prepare another article together! Ciao!

Andre Deutmeyer: I had a great time Dani. Thank you very much for having me, see you later man!

AdSense Optimization: Essential Tactics For Optimizing Your Google AdSense Ads On Your Site

AdSense optimization is a series of tactics to help you to improve Google AdSense performance on your blog site. One of the key issues you face when you decide to use AdSense is WHERE to place ads. Above the fold? At the Bottom? Left or Right column? The monetization power of your site depends on the choice you make.

To help you better understand WHERE to position your AdSense ads, The Inside AdSense team has released a series of three short videos, entitled "Optimisation Essentials", that can give you some good basic guidance on how to do ads placement, and how to increase your revenues with a rational design of your site.

In summary, here is what they recommend:

a) Use big ads.

b) Integrate your ads with the layout of your site.

c) Place your ads where users are more likely to see them.

Here all the details:

Optimisation Essentials (Part I - II - III)

Bigger Is Better - for AdSense Ad Units

Publishers often ask us what the best ad sizes are to include in their site's design, and we always point them to these three:

300x250 medium rectangle

728x90 leaderboard

160x600 skyscraper

These ad units have proven in the past to deliver better results for both publishers and advertisers.

Advertisers favour these formats, and if you've receiving all ad types, you'll find that advertisers will specifically target your sites more often. If you position your ad units well, users will be more likely to see these ad formats and find an ad that they're interested in.

When you're considering how to design your site, our testing has shown that displaying at least one of these ad formats on your page can increase your AdSense earnings potential.

So remember, sometimes bigger is better!

Dress for Success - Impressing Your Audience

Over the years, we've seen some colorful ad unit designs.

Some publishers design ad units that contrast with their site so that they stand out. Although this can work in some cases, we've found that ad units that match your site's design tend to perform better in terms of revenue and click-through-rate.

Users are more likely to read ads when they're well integrated into your site.

When you design your AdSense ads, keep these tips in mind:

Use colours that either blend with or complement your site's colours. Make the ads a part of your site.

Use lighter colours for borders, or no border at all.

Try rotating colours or occasionally switching the location of your ads on the page.

Save sets of frequently-used colours as a palette.

So give your ad design and colours some thought, and you'll notice the difference!

Position for Performance - Be Noticed

We've also made a heatmap to show you where the best placements are on a typical page. Great positions include:

Above the fold of a page (the section of the page a user can see without scrolling)

At the end of an article

Aligned with content

But don't just take our word for it - every website is different. Make sure you use your judgment of how visitors interact with your pages to determine good ad placements.

Position your ads so that they're visible, but be careful of intruding on the experience of your site's visitors.

Most of all, think like a user and you'll be able to balance your website's content with a successful ad strategy.

Where Should I Place Google Ads On My Pages?

The best location for Google ads varies from page to page, depending on content.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering where to position your ads:

What is the user trying to accomplish by visiting my site?

What do they do when viewing a particular page?

Where is their attention likely to be focused?

How can I integrate ads into this area without getting in the users' way?

How can I keep the page looking clean, uncluttered and inviting?

Certain locations tend to be more successful than others.

This "heat map" illustrates the ideal placing on a sample page layout. The colors fade from dark orange (strongest performance) to light yellow (weakest performance). All other things being equal, ads located above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold. Ads placed near rich content and navigational aids usually do well because users are focused on those areas of a page.

While this heat map is useful as a positioning guideline, we strongly recommend putting your users first when deciding on ad location. Think about their behavior on different pages, and what will be most useful and visible to them.

You'll find that the most optimal ad position isn't always what you expect on certain pages.

For example, on pages where users are typically focused on reading an article, ads placed directly below the end of the editorial content tend to perform very well. It's almost as if users finish reading and ask themselves, "What can I do next?" Precisely targeted ads can answer that question for them.

The best location for Google ads varies from page to page, depending on content.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering where to position your ads:
