Full Tsunami Video Footage, Pictures, Clips and TV News Stories

Seven days after the tsunami started hitting the poor northern tip of Sumatra, hundreds of video clips, TV news stories and thousands of images have stood as witnesses to the tragic event.

The goal of this resource is to provide a comprehensive clearinghouse of the visual content coming from many online resources — amateur and professional — which cover the December 26, 2004, tsunami in Asia. This is a simple, annotated guide to the videos, news clips and images available on the Internet. All sources are credited and linked.

Tsunami comes from the Japanese tsu (harbour) and nami (wave).

Tsunamis are large waves (like tidal waves) caused by seismic activity such as volcanic eruptions or a vertical displacement of the oceans - by earthquakes, landslides or meteorite strikes.

Here four video compilations of the best tsunami video footage I have been able to rescue:

  1. Tsunami Videos - Key Video Clips of the Tsunami as it Hits
  2. Tsunami Video Anthologies
  3. Survivors Report Their Experiences - Tsunami Videos
  4. Tsunami Prevention - What Could Have Been Done - Video Clips

Tsunami Video Hosting Initiative
The Media Bloggers Association, a rapidly growing organization dedicated to promote news-oriented and political bloggers, has set up a video hosting initiative that relieves video hosts from the increase in video bandwidth demand by seeking server capacity donations. As of Jan. 11th, over a dozen videos are listed with links to the original blogger and the current mirror locations. Check out the MediaBloggers' own blog, which has several posts about this initiative and pointers to big media, such as The Washington Post and BBC.

BBC News
In Tsunami Disaster Spurs Video Blogs, Clark Boyd, technology respondent for BBC News, describes how current technology created a phenomenon in video blogs and how heavily Internet readers have come to rely on amateurs' efforts to satisfy their need for information about the disaster. (Updated Jan. 14th 2005)

NBC 10
The NBC10.com video blog is a collection of videos, images and stories from NBC's sources about the tsunami disaster. It contains extended video footage originally featured on NBC local TV broadcasts, in addition to AP images from South Asia. This blog was started Dec. 27th and has been updated through March 2005 with many slideshows and videos. All material was hosted from NBC 10's own feed room.

Wave of Destruction
Geoffrey Huntley regularly updated his WaveOfDestruction (WOD) site until March 2005 and did a terrific job of adding videos and images, both in their original format and as torrent files. Huntley was very dedicated in his editing and made sure all of his links were accurate.

In addition to using the P2P file sharing protocol BitTorrent, Huntley suggested readers use YouSendIt to submit material to him. YouSendIt is a tool that serves as a temporary file server to get around the usual file size limitations that Internet service providers put up for email attachments.

WOD has also commissioned a videographer to shoot images of the Similan islands, an island group located one hundred kilometers north of Phuket.

Previous entry about WOD in this article.

Warning Against Bandwidth Overage Charges
Blogger Scott Sala has an entry called Tsunami Video Lesson in his blog. It shows how other video bloggers can learn from his experience when he 'carelessly' put up a single video that received so much traffic in one day that he got charged heavily for bandwidth overage. The same thing happened to others who host videos.

CNN.com International
Although its videos are mostly premium content (CNN uses RealPlayer Newspass, a USD $4.95 monthly subscription service), CNN's video log of the was worth a visit because it provided the latest news, eye-witness stories, exclusive photo galleries, background information and special reports.

you people need to stop getting all mad about this... it's a horrible thing that all the people died, but don't start blaming people. by the way, all you people who keep saying dumb stuff about how the plates moving cause the tsunami, and it had nothing to do with God, rack your little brains and think WHO put the plates there in the first place? things like that just don't happen on their own. and it is the start of the end of the world, but not like you would think. it's the start of the millenium when Jesus will come and reign over the earth.

i dont belive in the god thing but i think people are entitled to their views. if it helps them deal with this kind of thing then so be it. as long as they dont try and preach to me and realise im entitled to my view as well. i know someone who lost his mum and dad in the tsunami and my best wishes go out to him and all those that lost someone in the disaster.

2007-12-07 00:00:18

you know whatt.

OMG. all you id...s out there, if you actually paid attention in earth science, you'd know it was a plate that moved and kept pulling one under it and too much pressure was applied so the continental plate popped up from the trench causing a 9.3 earthquake under the ocean which inturn, caused the horendous tsunami.
SO STFU ABOUT GOD CAUSING IT.
THAT'S BULL----. kthx!

Stuff god!!! This is the earth's way and it's just a natural disaster..all you religious freaks out there, get a life and realise that sh*t happens..Yes, it is bad that many people died, but how about the people that died on the same day from car accidents and murders etc..The world is over populated anyway and it sounds that death is not the end if there was a god, it sounds that death is more peaceful then being alive in this world anyway. Those people that died are probably in the after life enjoying a big feast of turkey with loads of whatever made them happy when they were alive in their old life.

With a year passing since the NATURAL DISASTER that happened off Indonesia, I wonder if leasons have been learned...

1) The Tsunamis was caused by plates moving under the ocean floor - FACT (it wasn't God!)

2) Human Error WAS however involved - FACT (The Pacific Tsunamis Warning centre in Hawaii identified there was earthquake but the operators there had no idea who they should alert once they realised the impact such a quake would have).

3) More mistakes led to loss of live - FACT (Powerful computers in a Vienna office also picked up the seismic activity and although the festive season - which meant many staff were on holiday, the information was automatically transferred to several countries including Indonesia and Thailand but the infrastructure required to communicate this information further was simply not available.

According to Eenadu “it was the fault of the official machinery for its failure to alert people about the impending disaster of the tsunamis, in spite of having a full 150 minutes from when the earthquake occurred.”

When Samith Dhammasaroj the former chief Thailand Meteorological Department heard about the earthquake he realised a Tsunamis could (and probably would) occur. He tried to call the director general of the office he had worked for but as it was a Sunday, there was no one there. He told reporters that he had warned that this type of incident could occur but “everyone laughed at me and said I was a bad guy who wanted to ruin the tourist industry.”

Many have called for an early monitoring system but Phil McFadden , chief scientist of Geoscience Australia, the company involved in designing the Indian Ocean earning warning system by the Australian Government has pointed out;

“There’s no point in spending all the money on a fancy monitoring and a fancy analysis system unless we can make sure the infrastructure for the broadcast system is there.”

In other words, having an early warning system is only effective if the people have been educated about Tsunamis and how they should respond. According to Bill McGuire, director of Benfield Hazard Research Centre, University College London;

“It is also critical that the final chain in communication cascade – from emergency managers to population is efficient and effective”

These are less developed countries so this may take time and money.

Paradoxically, according to Robert Shiller, most people in the US (considered a first world country) do not have flood or earthquake insurance. Indeed, in California (one of the world’s most unstable geological areas) only one in six homeowners have purchased earthquake insurance.

After the damage in New Orleans (they knew the levies weren't strong enough), it seems that it is HUMAN STUPIDITY rather than anything else that is often at fault. It's NOT God's wrath or whatever other mumbo jumbo...

Sometimes God hide from us His good purpose in death that we may endure living. Even this, is part of His intelligent design in the ultimate good of the universe which is not unconnected to our wholistic gain beyond the physical and material world- The lesson here is for us to come to terms with the theory of INTELLIGENT DESIGN, as against that of EVOLUTION.

Well, God has shown a little more of his ugly side. Let people be forewarned of this and be cautious and take precautions, so that such a thing won't be as disastrous in the future. May all the beautiful souls rest in peace.

2005-03-28 00:50:01

Steve

The sobering reality is that we all die. Not a soul on earth can escape that. Some earlier than others, and sometimes it seems so unfair, but each of us has an appointed day and then nothing here is going to matter except the choice we made to follow God or not. He made us, we belong to Him, He can require obedience. In our sin-sick state of minds it's not always easy to see God's love, but it is there! Seek Him with all your heart and He will show you.

I need some help. the other day I downloaded a touching tsunami memorial video, but i lost the video and i cant find where I got it from. It was in quicktime format and in the video, obviously there was a song in the background, but at the end, it played backwards so that the wave went back over the wall into the ocean, and a couple that had been swept away by a wave had been brought back to where they were standing. I have searched all over this website, and I am absolutly sure I got it from here, but the only tsunami memorial video I can find is that of Chris Valentines, which I know it couldnt have been that one, because my computer does not have that type of video format. Please, if you know of the video I an talking of, please respond.

well i think the site is great no doubt . Its turning more into a fight of gods here .All i want to say is that its a karmic cycle and follows newtons third law every action has equal and opposite reaction , the nature is just doing the balancing act . Its a lesson that life is not permanent but is short and temporary . So i take this as a warning from thelord telling me that this world is temporary and full of miseries . And if people ask me what about the people who died, all i can say is that the lifetime of a soul is predestined , but the type of death isnt thats all . hence may lord shower the choicest blessings on the needy and the souls who have passed away reach the highest spiritual platform.

I think God is absolutely not responsible for this tsunami. It is becuase of Man who has been using the earth so roughly that the earth tells man "You can't kill me". Clearly, the earth has its own restorative powers given to it by the source of Life. If man treats nature with respect, it will do the same.

Man. These bible bashers who revel and joy in the death of thousands, so that they can proclaim that it is the work of their Lord, sicken me.
They ain't no better than the jackass Muslim extremists who kill themselves in the name of their own version of God.
I really hope these religious extremists never get hold of power or they really may screw up the World good and proper in the name of witholding their sick and twisted prophecies (Darn, I forgot about the beloved Bushmeister!).
At least the followers of Nostradamus don't revel in death, so that they can proclaim some vague premonition.
I hope you sick bible-bashers are putting your hands in your pockets and giving generously to the poor vulnerable victims of these disasters. Or do you fear that this may disturb the path to the armageddon that you are all praying for?
I know you mean good, but you are generally sick. WAKE UP! There ain't no Lord, and there ain't no Santa!
The tsunami was a natural disaster caused by the shifting of tectonic plates.
I need to get going now as I am about to be struck down for believing in science instead of some fabled book assembled by King Hezekiah in the 13th century. WE'RE ALL DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEEDDD!!!!!!!! SICKOS!

I'm currently visiting Thailand as a tourist, and I can tell you that it is the most beautiful place on Earth. I've travelled all over the various continents and I can say that the generosity and beauty of these people is humbling enough to bring tears. And this land is blessed with vistas that are so breathtaking that they can not be described.
I will never visit Florida or Spain again!

I don't like to believe that God caused such massive destruction because he is a much more loving God than that. But I do believe that it is all happening just as he fortold in the new testament and these are signs that he is a very real God. I mean come on, the Bible has been a round for a very long time and who would have ever known back in those days about the "earthquakes in divers places" of which the Bible predicted would forshadow the beginning of the end. No I don't believe God caused it but I do believe that he is the only one that can save us from falling victim to the other Bible prophecies that are yet to be fulfilled. This sight is truely awesome. Thanks.

The Lord is trying towake souls up with this. You must be saved before the lord returns, or you will find yourself burning in a lake of fire FOREVER!!! Repent before it is too late. Today is the day of Salvation.

God has everything to do with this. Don't you see that these are his attempts to get your attention. Listen up! All of these things have been predicted, you have just ignored them. Read Revelations. These are Gods last attempts to get you to quite living in sin! How many of those that died are now in hell becouse they did not listen to the truth? I tell you the truth, this is a direct plea from God for you to come to know him as Lord and savior. If you have any questions, email me. I will only tell you the truth. Not my truth, THE truth. email me at phade1182@yahoo.com The Bible has the answers you seek, look to God in this, and you will find the truth.

When events such as these occur, it's in our conditioned human nature to say "what will be, will be".

You could, however, take a different approach - and think. Ask questions. Question what appears to be undeniable. Do your own research. Collect facts. Analyze them. Think again. Think what others believe to be unthinkable. Think for yourself.

These two follow-on articles, published on this very site, will give you some real food for thought. Treat them as nothing more than that:

Tsunami Earthquake: Tragedy Or Oil Drilling Disaster?

i am so sorrry about that but i think that tis is the the sign of the last day of the world(quamat)we should do what our Allah had told us to do and this is the right path to follow.

To see this terrible event happen made me think about all the people that were there having a great time with little on their mind, just kicking back with their families and friends. To us we never got too know that.I just cant believe of all the families that waited for loved ones to come back home too see and hear of what they have done, only to watch in terrible disbelief of the waves coming to shore.I pray and hope for the best for all the victims that were there.

There is some good that has come from this disaster. It has made us all aware of how small and insignificant we are in comparison to the power of nature. And the videos have allowed us all to view the destruction as it unfolded, and make us all feel so lucky that we were not involved. Nature is so powerful and it is something that we all take for granted. It is still amazing to believe that a small movement in the Earth's tectonic plates could create such destruction.

2005-01-20 12:50:59

Riana

i pray to god that all the people who were hurt survive and get through life without any more problems. the disaster that happened in tsunami was a horrifying thing it just proves that mankind can do anything at anytime. but all those people who are suffering today dont you worry god will inshallah put things right one day.

2005-01-20 09:24:07

JasZ

well, i think God is not to be blame in this whole thing. This disaster is not from Him but from Satan. Satan is said to rule the earth and is called "prince of the earth". Jesus will certainly come again to judge him. In fact, this tsunami tells us that we are getting more and more close to the end times, where Jesus is coming back.

Ultimately, I pray that nothing like this will happen in near future, not that it will not, but please not now as so many nations are still picking up the pieces.

2005-01-19 20:53:20

martin

Well, the earthquake was the cause and it subsequently resulted in tsunami and floods. Actually God could do it without breaking any promise (:-) but as I said blaming God for such things is absolutely nonsense. That's just what the nature is.

Every time we can't understand something we need God. We don't know how we came into being so we need some (even the most strange fairy tales) explanations because its still better than to know nothing. Now we can't understand how this could happen so we blame God....and that's not a good way how to deal with life. we can make it working here even without God....well, sometimes we would undoubtedly need one.

2005-01-19 01:59:51

Steve DuBeau

We know this did not take God by surprise. The earth is crumbling under the man's choice to sin and so man is doing it to himself.

Jesus will return and fix things and that is our blessed hope.

2005-01-18 15:17:37

I hope that all those people will get reunited with their loved ones. It would be awful to have to go through that.

Yes, this is a horrrible tragedy, but please stop with the comments of god being the one who created this horrible destruction. Have people not been educated on how powerful nature is? well, i guess here was lesson #1 of natures stength. god bless everyone.

2005-01-17 19:43:35

Nerd

Thank you Martin! God (if something like God exists) has nothing to do with such incidents. Even if he created the universe, he's not keeping it running every single day. Nature is moving powerfully and because of this particular harsh movment many had to die. Sad but true: God will not be the answer in this case! By the way: Back then, God promised to NOAH that he will not let such a flood happen again because he feels sorry about the devastation. Is god now a liar??? (No, because he never talks with humans, noah is a funny invention :-))

2005-01-16 23:11:30

martin

I wouldn't even mention God in connection with this disaster. Actually trying to make him the cause of this tragedy would mean that God must be a bitch or he is not at all....and that is exactly what I believe in.

Wow, I'm lovin' this site. So much info, in such a small space.. Even though the world will eventually end.. I guess everyone is getting ready to build what another bomb shelter? Well, I hope that the bomb shelter keeps the flames of hell away from ya'll. And, me myself, I prefer that the 666 is NOT tattooed on my 4head.. (Such an ugly place for a tat to be, to begin with). So, instead of everyone getting all worked up about the end of the world.. Live each day like its your last, cause no matter what, we have no clue WHEN it will happen. This disaster is ubber sad & very unfortunate.. But, you can't control the world & others, the only one you can control is yourself.. (And, that is figuring you actually have that ability.)

Anyways, the site rocks, woohoo. :-)

tsunami is more frightening than anything .most of the people were caught unaware some were busy enjoying themselves ,some wherecommiting adultery, fornications and any other sins that youcan think of and they were caught in some of their sins,no time to repent or to make their life right(i am not saying this because i am happy,No!)and if most of them were sinners their suols is already in prison.these people have finished their course, its now left for me and you think about it carefull.what makes you think you still have a lot of time here on earth, repent now

First, This event realize me How Great The God is and How small we are as human being only. Two, the very important things; it is an education to everyone to STOP BLASPHEMY GOD whoever you are or whatever your religion and STOP to do crime. Three, Save and Protect the Nature. Beloved you all each other, cause The Kingdom of The Great Lord, King of King, Almighty God shall coming soon. Prepare yourself and be ready NOW ON!!!
Jesus Bless Us.

When I read and hear stuff like: "this is a sign" or "the end" or "please god help" or "god's revenge" I always feel surrounded by little minds. Why can't people accept that live's always a risk on this planet and that nature is not predictable.
Besides: Every week 150'000 people starve on this mother earth. And do we care? I guess not. So please stop yelling metaphysical s... around. Please!

Hello

Congratulations - a good site! About this big disaster, one thing i don`t understand.... Didn`t anybody know what a tsunami is - and the potential threat that it represents - before it hit those places?!? Indonesia is well known for being situated in the so named `circle of fire`... Other tsunamis struck before (Krakatau explosion, and so many times already in Japan and China, amongst others). I live in Brazil and if i saw the sea `disapearing into horizon` i would know that it is the clear sign of a tsunami to come. I have readen about before.... And the people of those islands, most of them living from what the sea gives, did they ever been warned about this danger?!? And what did government of those places do till now?? A warning system used for a long time in the USA (Hawaii), Japan etc should have been created for a long time ago already.... Scientists have warned, i`ve read this too... But no-one gave attention... In the end, always the same explanation: Money speaks louder.... People has no acces to information.... People pays the costs.... I just hope that this horrible loss of people makes things change.... for good. It`s about time to!

GOD only obstruct the highest waves that arose from the sea. Man cannot control even if he raises a big wall even at about the hight of a coconut tree. We can do only onething i.e. to pray GOD that such things do not occur at least in future.

This horrible tsunami is only one basis that mankind cannot do anything when extreme danger is coming without enough precaution. This is one big reason why every country has to cooperate in setting-up a tsunami warning system. Considering that only some country possess the capability of producing one, I am calling the attention of those who can afford to help in building one for the betterment of our lives. Let us all work together in saving lives! God bless us all...

i think that the tsunami disaster will make countrys and people see death in a different ways and feel for the peopel that have lost in this tremendus thing. it is suprising that a pour fo water can kill up to 100,000+ people i think that the most horrible thing about it is that cildren are without familes and every day of clen up they find more and more bodies. i think that this disaster was and is a bad thing to happen but also it can be a avantage because like they say 'you can only learn from your mistaes' althrough there are many dead and people have lost there home land sprits are still high and doesnt that just say something to you. if they can do it so can we.

This disaster is a sign that nature is still in charge of the planet. The planet hiccups and hundreds of thousands die. We have to take care of each other.
