Powerful PDF-Making Tools For GIS, CAD, Database Publishing

Layton Graphics is the company behind some very powerful and unique PDF creation tools.

One is MAP2PDF, a PDF creation tool that is entirely dedicated to support and facilitate the automatic creation of PDFs from complex documents such as maps and databases, which can automatically generate geo-referenced documents with scale and latitude-longitude data embedded in them. This tool takes your raster and proprietary CAD and GIS data formats and publishes them to intelligent PDF files. The PDF files can then be viewed, printed, searched and queried using the freely available Adobe Reader, and viewed, printed, searched, queried, marked up and redlined using full Adobe Acrobat.

Also available from the same company is a product called CAD2PDF which converts native AutoCAD and MicroStation files to text-searchable PDF files. CAD2PDF also allows some pretty unique features I have been looking for in a PDF creation tool for years:

  • Submit multiple page sizes in a batch rendering process
  • Specify any plot scale or plot size at submission
  • Support company standards for fonts, line styles, line weights and colors
  • Automate PDF creation from HPGL, TIFF and CALS
  • Automate hyperlinking and bookmarking of PDFs in large drawing sets
  • CAD2PDF is server-based and does not require Acrobat or CAD software on the client side.

    Excellent tools from Layton Graphics.

SprutCAM brings CNC milling capabilities to SolidWorks 2005 software

Integrated software allows users to seamlessly import their designs directly into SprutCAM for CNC machining

NABEREZHNYE CHELNY, RUSSIAN FEDERATION - July, 14, 2004 - SPRUT Technology, Inc. today announced that its SprutCAM software supports SolidWorks® 2005 3D mechanical design software. Engineers and designers use SprutCAM and SolidWorks to provide better programming efficiency, easier CAM organization, and superior tool path quality so they can design better products faster and more accurately, speeding time to market.

A SolidWorks Solution Partner Product, SprutCAM allows users to add directly to the SolidWorks button. When the add-in is selected, the current SolidWorks part is opened directly in SprutCAM. The user can then immediately update existing toolpaths for the part, or easily select an entire set of operations from a similar part to apply to the CAD model.

SprutCAM allows users to directly open a model in SprutCAM while in a SolidWorks session. The user can continue to design the model and then update and apply existing toolpaths without switching from one application to another. This associativity provides better machining efficiency, easier CAM organization, and superior toolpath quality.

SolidWorks 2005 expands on the software’s legacy of ease of use, design power, and affordability by also providing users with comprehensive drawing tools and new productivity features that will speed the adoption of 3D design around the world.

“Efficient machining is crucial to 3D modeling, and SprutCAM makes it easy,” said Brian Houle, Partner Program manager for SolidWorks. “Enabling engineers to access SprutCAM via SolidWorks helps them work more efficiently and accelerate product delivery. Giving engineers powerful design tools with just a couple of mouse clicks is what made SolidWorks the number-one supplier of 3D mechanical design software.”
