FlashMobs Are Here!

Flashmobs Are Real
FlashmobFrisco.jpg
At least 150 flash mobbers spun in circles this evening while crossing busy Market Street in San Francisco. They spun and crossed over and over again, back and forth, until the flash mob suddenly disappeared, 10 minutes after it began. - Source: Cheesebikini?)

As correctly anticipated by Howard Reinghold in his excellent SmartMobs, The Next Social Revolution, smartmobs are starting to appear more and more frequently.

A new phenomenon called Flashmobbing, brings together tens or hundreds of people at a specific time and location by way of informal invitations, through blogs, emails, instant messages and dedicated online services.

The instant-mob devotes itself to a pre-determined task, action or demonstration and then rapidly dissolves just as it had formed. Flashmobs can be social, artistic, political or just fun.

The first Italian Flashmob is scheduled here in Rome for this very Thursday.

To find out more about Flashmobs I strongly invite to check out the highly illustrated reportage prepared at Cheesebikini?, where most of the Flashmobs that have taken place so far have been well covered.

For a full video clip of the recent fourth Manhattan Flashmob please see this downloadable video from correspondent David Danzig.

Coverage also in Real Audio format, from National Public Radio "The Next Big Thing" is also accessible here for listening.

Finally, here is the original invitation I received yesterday evening from Roman pioneer flashmobber J. Jack Flash (here is also a Babel Fish English translated version of the same):

Organizer: JJFlash (70)
Location: Via del Corso
Primo Flash Mob a Roma.

ISTRUZIONI - MOB NUMERO 1
Luogo: Roma, Via del Corso.
Data e ora inizio: Giovedì, 24 luglio 2003, alle ore 19:00.
Durata: 10 minuti

8. Dopo l\'evento, curiosate pure sul sito http://flashmob.fantasmaformaggino.it , dove verrà inserito un reportage dell\'evento.

Buon divertimento!

For setting up your own Flasmob please see online free service Flocksmart.
Though still in beta and incomplete, with the due patience, it does what is supposed to do.

Recommended.
