LOGOS International translation service and e-translation portal
http://www.logos.net
Web Service
FREE
= must have
LOGOS is one of the rare global services who started leveraging the Internet in unsuspect times. Over the last 20 years, this company has been growing steadily providing high-quality multilingual translation and software localization services, in Italy first and then on an international scale.
Currently, LOGOS' network of translation centres spans across several European countries, China, Korea, Japan, Egypt, Brazil, with a total of 3,000 translators working in all major languages of the world. The translators are connected via Intranet/Extranet and utilise the same translation management tools offered by Logos.
This is however, let's say, the plainest side of the business, though of exceptional quality. The real surprises start on the LOGOS Web site http://www.logos.net, where both the professionals and the enthusiastic linguists can find a real translation tools galore.
First is the free multilingual online dictionary that is constantly updated by LOGOS' professional translators. The dictionary currently has 7.580.560 entries in a total of 197 languages, including "exotic" ones such as Zulu, Tigrinya and a few Italian dialects. If you register, you can contribute definitions to the dictionary, under the supervision and approval of professional translators. For technical terminology, go to Glossaries to search 910 online technical dictionaries.
Access the Logos Dictionary at:
http://www.logos.it/dictionary/owa/ old_dictionary.sp?lg=EN
These are not the only tools available for free. A very interesting one is the Wordtheque, at:
http://www.wordtheque.com/
(a huge multilingual library of novels, technical literature and translated texts). When you search for a word (in one of 197 languages), the result is displayed in the original context the word appears, with the full reference to the source work. As a translator myself, I find this tool quite useful when I want to check out the contexts in which a word or expression can appear.
Usually, a link to the original Web source in which the word is found is provided and optionally you can download the full work in text version.
Another favourite of mine is Verba, at:
http://www.verba.org/owa-v/verba_dba. verba_main.create_page?lang=en
a Logos' online tool for conjugating verbs. Quite a trouble-shooter when you deal with fancy verb endings.
And there's room for fun, too. If you're a crossword addict, try the Crossword section, at:
http://www.logos.it/pls/dictionary/ permuta.main? lang=en&source=crossword where you can enter unfinished words using a wildcard character, and get all the words that contain the letters you entered in a given language. There's also an online Multilingual Crossword if you want to test your vocabularies in at least 6 languages.
